If you learned Arabic through grammar tables and still freeze when someone greets you this is where you actually start. السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ — as-salāmu ʿalaykum — Peace be upon you وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلَام — wa ʿalaykumu s-salām — And upon you, peace مَا اسْمُكَ؟ — mā ismuk? — What is your name? اسْمِي… — ismī… — My name is… كَيْفَ حَالُكَ؟ — kayfa ḥāluk? — How are you? الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، بِخَيْر — al-ḥamdu lillāh, bi-khayr — Praise be to Allah, I’m well مِنْ أَيْنَ أَنْتَ؟ — min ayna anta? — Where are you from? أَنَا مِنْ… — anā min… — I am from… تَشَرَّفْتُ بِمَعْرِفَتِكَ — tasharraftu bi-maʿrifatik — Pleased to meet you One note most beginners miss: كَيْفَ حَالُكَ؟ is for a man, كَيْفَ حَالُكِ؟ for a woman. That final kasrah is the whole difference. Arabic tells you who you’re speaking to before you finish the sentence. Master these five and you can hold your first conversation today. Everything after that is expansion, not starting over. Save this and say them out loud reading them silently doesn’t build the muscle.
