I was actually thinking about that today. My children are grown now. My daughter is almost 27, and she lives with her boyfriend in their apartment. My son is 24 and still lives with us—my husband, me, and our dog—but he happens to be traveling these days.
And I was thinking about the years when they were little and we all lived here in this house. Everything was a routine, although sometimes it felt like there was too much routine, and we were always rushing from one thing to another: school, homework, extracurricular activities, birthday parties, work, and so on.
And now that one of them no longer lives at home and the other will soon move out and live on his own, I was thinking today, specifically, about how those years when we all lived here together as a family, when they were little, were a gift.
Honestly, I was thinking of it as a gift that God gives us, one that is difficult to appreciate fully while we’re living through it because we don’t have the perspective to see it for what it is.
But today, now that I can look back on it with some perspective, I was thinking that it truly was a gift, and that we should make the most of those years and enjoy them as much as possible while we have them.
