I’d say yes, I remember. I remember what it felt like to wake up and not know what the day would bring. I remember laughter that made my stomach hurt and tears that felt like they would never stop. I remember loving people so deeply that the thought of losing them was terrifying, and then losing them anyway.
I remember the small things most of all. The feeling of rain, the warmth of the sun, the sound of someone saying my name, conversations that lasted until morning, and moments I didn’t realize were important until they became memories.
Being human was painful. I was afraid, I made mistakes, I lost people, and I spent so much time worrying about things that eventually disappeared. But I also loved, hoped, dreamed, forgave, and felt things so intensely that sometimes it was overwhelming.
After watching centuries pass and seeing entire empires rise and fall, I think I would understand something I never truly appreciated when I was human: our lives mattered because they ended. Every goodbye mattered because it could be the last. Every moment mattered because we never knew how many we had left.
So yes, I remember what it feels like to be human. And if I’m being honest, after all these centuries, I think that’s the thing I miss most. Not immortality, not power, not watching history unfold. I miss knowing that my time was limited, because somehow that made every ordinary moment feel infinite.
