@goldenfinn5: Cambodia is using UNESCO as a platform to claim Thailand’s national dress as its own Khmer traditional clothing! My question is: How did the dress that Queen Sirikit, the Queen of King Rama IX, only adapted and designed for use in the 1960s suddenly become traditional Khmer clothing? Sukhothai was influenced by Dvaravati and Srivijaya, which is why it adopted the practice of wearing a sash or a single-shoulder drape that persisted through the Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin periods. Ancient Khmer culture only used a cloth wrapped around the chest until the end of the Angkor period. Later, the Khmer began to heavily receive influences from Ayutthaya and Theravada Buddhism, leading to the construction of Thai-style Theravada temples—including among the Khmer living in present-day Vietnam. Because the Khmer absorbed Thai culture for a long time—and because Khmer royalty came to grow up and study in Thailand—they took even more Thai culture back with them, including poetry and literary works which they brought back to be retold in the Khmer royal court. Later, during the Khmer Rouge regime, the slaughter of teachers and knowledgeable scholars resulted in modern Khmer people not knowing very much about these things anymore.
