Ah yes, the classic relationship experience where apparently everything was allowed except calling it a relationship. 😭 Good morning texts? Absolutely. Talking every day? Of course. Dates, affection, late-night calls, emotional intimacy, jealousy when you talk to somebody else, acting like you’re basically exclusive, and treating you exactly like a girlfriend? Completely reasonable. But the second you ask, ā€œSo… what are we?ā€ suddenly this man has entered a profound season of personal growth and ā€œjust isn’t ready for anything serious right now.ā€ SIR??? 😭 You were apparently ready for every benefit of a relationship except the responsibility of actually being in one. And that’s why situations like this hurt so much. Feelings don’t wait for somebody to officially assign you a title. If you consistently create relationship-level intimacy with someone, it’s completely understandable that attachment can develop. Of course, sometimes people genuinely start dating with good intentions and realize along the way that they aren’t ready or don’t see a future. That isn’t automatically manipulation, and nobody owes someone a relationship simply because they got close. But if you already know you don’t want commitment while knowingly encouraging someone to invest like a partner, honesty needs to happen before they’re deeply attached—not conveniently afterward. Tell me you’re unavailable while I still have enough information to decide whether this arrangement works for me. Don’t build ninety percent of a relationship, let me emotionally move in, and then act surprised when I ask whether there’s going to be a front door. Because ā€œI’m not ready for a relationshipā€ is completely valid. Treating someone like your girlfriend until she develops feelings and only then remembering you’re not ready? Yeah, that’s where we’re going to have questions.
