@naturalhistorymuseum: Once the most common bird in the United States, the Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius) was driven to extinction by humans as a result of overhunting and habitat destruction. In September 1914, Martha, the last-known living Passenger Pigeon, died at the Cincinnati Zoo. Her death at age 29 after a lifetime in captivity marked the disappearance of her once-abundant species. Museum visitors can spot the Passenger Pigeon in the Hall of New York City Birds on Floor 3. One of the Museum’s earliest displays, it showcases a flock of Passenger Pigeons foraging for acorns. #museum #extinction #passengerpigeon #Science #ornithology

I cry about the passenger pigeon whenever I read its name. The way it once literally darkened the sky and nested along our Great Lakes and lived in companionable proximity to humans for 25,000 years and colonialism killed it in 400 😭

… don’t get me started on the parrots that used to live in North America but were all hunted to extinction. They were so many of them they filled the skies and were said to block out the sun bc there were so many.

Still tryna figure out how to frame my feathers from one, such beautiful birds. It’s a shame what happened, from 5 billion to none.☹️

I recently saw Martha at the Smithsonian. I cried for several minutes looking at her; she’s so beautiful and it breaks me to think about her dying alone. However, she shares her display with a Guam Rail, a bird that was actually saved from extinction by conservation efforts. She gets to be with a bird that was saved because of the work she inspired

Ugh I grew up going to the Cincy zoo where Martha died and there is still a little building dedicated to her and the other passenger pigeons. Genuinely breaks my heart that these pigeons were once a part of daily life; my great great grandfather genuinely thought he was going crazy when he heard the news they had gone extinct (born 1850s and had seen the enormous flocks that once migrated across the US 💔)

Here's a sad fact for you: the last passenger pigeon *and* the last Carolina parakeet, both died in the same cage in the Cincinnati Zoo

the extinction of Lyall’s wren is so heartbreaking. killed off the mainland by non-native rats. then, the last surviving population on an island was hunted down by introduced feral cats. they were flightless birds, and stood no chance 💔
