I’m a pediatric dental assistant, so just to give some context: papoose restraints are a safety tool, like a seatbelt or car seat, not punishment. Not every kid needs one, but for those who do, it’s a great option. It’s not painful, it actually feels like a hug, which is why a lot of my kiddos call it “the hugger” and it calms them down. If a kid moves suddenly during treatment, they could get hurt, so this keeps them safe. I see less resistance and more cooperation with it. The alternative is IV sedation, and I’d rather avoid putting a kid through those risks when a gentle wrap does the job safely.

Hi- so my dentist did this and I now have a severe phobia of dentist 😁 completely understand the necessity of it, but it does create trauma in many children

For everyone giving this a hard no and would never. What would you do then? what is the other option if the child is combative, they NEED dental work for their health, and for the procedure to be safe so no one gets stabbed or poked or cut with anything? And if you say sedation, that also comes with risks as well and mind you the cost. We all know dental insurance is garbage.

This was my reason to stop working in pediatrics where I’m from. I think it’s absolutely insane. How would any child want to go back to a dentist after being in one of those? I know sedation isn’t available at every peds office or to make it a hospital case. But?? it is literally traumatizing for a child in my opinion. I will never work for an office that requires a papoose board.

I would prefer this to sedation if both options were viable as a parent. Dental care is a necessity just like medical care, not safe to proceed if a child is flailing all around. The mural here is also so adorable.
