@tootall2function: As much as our counseling appointment wasn’t the most beneficial, I am at least glad that it sparked a great discussion between he and I about boundaries. I’ve decided I need to really make it a point to start teaching him how to care for his home instead of just doing it myself because I’m able to do it faster. Taking care of the elderly is very much like taking care of children and instead of doing things for them I need to learn to be patient and teach them to do it themselves. I learned a lot today 🫶🏽 #community #kindness #caregiver #MentalHealth #volunteer

It takes a while to find the right fit. I would consider finding a male counselor who is a veteran. They have experience with men who struggle talking about feelings.

A heavy accent can be sooo hard for the elderly and those who are deaf/hard of hearing. Not everyone does good with counselling either. Hope he comes around and y’all find a good fit. Keep up the awesome work you’re doing.

You are doing such a great job!!! I know there’s still work to be done. You should see if any Boy Scouts need volunteer hours and they could get the yard cleaned up before winter. Also there maybe other groups needing hours to help with attic & basement. Seriously you are amazing and doing great. We need more people like you ❤️❤️

See if you can get a in-home counselor and or someone that could go to his house and pose as a friend of yours there to help. Build a relationship with him and then let him know she has a counseling degree as she is asking questions and providing feedback. Maybe if you remove the thought of “a shrink” and pose her asa friend there to help out” would allow him to open up and not have his guard up

Hello! Counselor here! If going into an office is a barrier, there are counselors who provide home based care. I used to work for an agency where I met with folks in their home for sessions. It may differ by state, but your sweet friend might be more open to chatting with someone if it feels like they’re just stopping by to check on him.

I have quite a few clients that to the Day programs! In my experience they can be extremely beneficial and I would say it’s sooo worth it. Not only does it give you a break but it gives him that social interaction/ communication that he is looking for.

Not hearing well can cause a cognitive decline. Happening with my grandpa. He has hearing aids but he’s 91 and just wont wear them.

My father has dementia and even in the early stages he would think he was in relationships with many women at different times women who were nice to him he would believe they were interested in a relationship and therefore in his eyes they were his girlfriends it is such a terrible condition Many try and take advantage of it. So glad your heart is pure. Sometimes a make believe world is all they can comprehend. We are lucky my father is still with us but it’s hard 😢

about 6 yrs before my father's hospice care, he was doing this. he was flirting/delusional with all the nurses one minute and getting very angry the next. 🖤 he confused people with others he had known, but also seemed competent. back and forth a lot. 🖤 you're doing awesome 💕💕💕

Try taking him to the VFW in his area. To make friends there. Labor day is coming up. Maybe they have a BBQ or bingo. Most city's provide free senior centers. and they include pickup and drop off with a lunch. Contact the church for advise on programs in your community.

There's a memory cafe in Everett for people with memory issues that he might enjoy. It's at 10am , but maybe someone else can take him. I run the memory cafe at the library that I work at and I think the people who come really enjoy the socializing part. We also do an easy craft and have brochures from the Alzheimer's Association available. https://homage.org/event/memory-cafe-every-third-tuesday-3/

I can’t lie, I would struggle to not get similar feelings for someone who was taking care of me to this degree and I’m half his age. When you haven’t really had someone care for you ever, or in a really long time, it’s understandable to experience some kind of limerence. Hopefully he’ll learn to adapt to this situation and learn to make you more comfortable not less. You’re doing amazing, as always, Caitlin. 💚

You are doing such a great job I got a tad excited at the prospect of him getting some time to spend with people his own age and make friends I think this all stems from him being alone again abandoned it will take a bit of time to trust he’s such a wee soul and you are an actual angel on earth please never feel guilty for taking a day or two for you in fact I prescribe it monthly at least 🥰

The accent thing is very hard!! If you get to the point of an assisted living, double check the staff and how heavy accents may be. I delight in accents but my poor sweet uncle struggles with communication which is very challenging.
