She was nearly eight feet tall—and all she ever wanted was to live a normal life. Anna Haining Swan was born in Nova Scotia in 1846 as a perfectly healthy 13-pound baby. Then she started growing. By adulthood, she stood nearly 8 feet tall and weighed more than 400 pounds. In the 1800s, her height made everyday life difficult—and turned her into a spectacle everywhere she went. At just 16, Anna joined P.T. Barnum's traveling exhibitions. But she refused to be treated as nothing more than a sideshow attraction. She performed, learned languages, played piano, traveled internationally, and even met Queen Victoria. Then, in 1871, she met Martin Van Buren Bates, a man almost as tall as she was. For the first time, Anna had met someone who understood what it meant to be stared at everywhere you went. They fell in love and married in London that same year. After retiring from show business, they built a home in Ohio specifically designed for their enormous height. For once, Anna could walk through a doorway without bending down. But tragedy followed. Anna gave birth to two children. One weighed 18 pounds; the other nearly 24 pounds. Both died within hours of birth. Anna and Martin never had another child. Anna's health eventually failed, and in 1888, just one day before her 42nd birthday, she died of heart failure. Martin never remarried. He died in 1919 and was buried beside her. Anna's life was extraordinary—not simply because she was one of the tallest women ever recorded, but because she refused to let a world obsessed with her appearance define her. She traveled. She earned her own money. She found love. And most importantly, she built a life where she could finally be seen not as a giant—but simply as Anna.
