Perhaps poverty is largely linked to unemployment, which often means having more time on your hands. And naturally, when people have more unstructured time and fewer activities to occupy themselves with, sex may become one of the activities they engage in more frequently 🤷🏽♀️

Fertility is high in the communities we consider “poor” primarily due to lifestyle and diet. Low income earners actually eat healthier, less preservatives and less processed foods. They walk and are mostly active due to the nature of jobs they. Stress levels and mental health is also surprisingly less in those communities. They are not worried about targets, stocks, the next deadline etc. So health wise the people in the rurals are overall healthier and more fertile. 2. For Wealthly ppl success is measured by acquisition of material things, education, goals of travelling the world,etc. whilst for the less fortunate success looks like owning a home, growing a community, having children who will continue the family name, having children who “might” change the situation at home one day. So the correlation is that both look at child bearing from different lens. The more educated/wealthy = a child is an expense, more responsibility and requires time they are not willing to sacrifice. Poor= a child is an investment, source of pride and achievement.

This isn't as complicated as you think Poorer people don't have access to information so they don't know about certain contraceptives which are convenient and they often live in areas that don't have easily accessible clinics

I think the correlation between poverty and fertility is more complicated than saying poor people simply “choose” to have more children. Yes, South Africa has free public healthcare, but many poor people don’t have medical aid, reliable transport or easy access to quality reproductive healthcare. And even when women go to clinics for contraception, some are shamed or discouraged for wanting injections, pills, etc. There’s also economic dependence. Some women depend on men financially and may not have the power to negotiate contraception or decide when they want children. So sometimes it’s not that they want to keep having babies they simply don’t have the resources, support or autonomy to prevent pregnancy. So poverty can contribute to higher fertility through limited access, economic dependence, lack of reproductive autonomy and unintended pregnancies, which can then perpetuate the cycle of poverty. STOP SHAMING PEOPLE!!!
