The real reason is the Chinese government forces them all to. There's no reason why American businesses couldn't hire local leadership like they do in many other markets. The Chinese government does not want foreign ownership of business ventures in China. It's the same way TikTok ended up owned by an American company in the US.

Hey! The real reason western companies do this is because Chinese law often required subjecting all branches of the company globally to chinese law, so companies opt to bifurcate the Chinese division of a company and partner with a domestic Chinese company.

Yeah, I think something similar happens here with 7-Eleven in Hawaii. 7-Eleven Hawaii is owned by 7-Eleven Japan (ie different from the parent company on the mainland that was probably bought out by another associated Japanese company). Due to different things in regards to ownership, this allows the Hawaii chain to have local foods that the mainland chains wouldn’t be able to have, if memory serves me correctly 🤔
