Fisiológicamente, este órgano se divide en cuatro cavidades: dos superiores llamadas aurículas, que reciben la sangre, y dos inferiores llamadas ventrículos, que la expulsan. El ciclo comienza cuando la sangre desoxigenada de todo el cuerpo regresa al corazón a través de las venas cavas y entra en la aurícula derecha. Esta cavidad se contrae y empuja la sangre a través de la válvula tricúspide hacia el ventrículo derecho, el cual, al contraerse, envía la sangre hacia los pulmones mediante la arteria pulmonar; allí, la sangre libera dióxido de carbono y se recarga de oxígeno fresco.
