I honestly don’t think child support should automatically be based on who makes more money, especially when custody is truly 50/50. I understand situations where one parent stayed home during the marriage, gave up a career, or needs time to become financially independent after a divorce. But in general, I think both parents should be expected to contribute financially, and the actual expenses for the child should be shared as equally as possible. When I divorced, my ex-husband was an amazing dad, we just weren’t good as husband and wife. He took care of our girls, had them just as much as I did, and paid for things when they were with him. I never understood why, on top of doing his half of the parenting and covering expenses in his own home, he should automatically have to pay me additional money simply because one parent may earn more.To me, 50/50 parenting should mean 50/50 responsibility. Of course there are exceptions, and every situation is different, but earning more shouldn’t automatically mean you’re financially responsible for the other household
