@thevirusshow: A little-known virus is attracting increasing attention across Europe: Shamonda virus. The virus belongs to the Simbu serogroup of orthobunyaviruses and primarily affects animals. In 2026, detections have been reported across several European countries, including Germany, Switzerland and France. In Baden-Württemberg, Germany, alone, more than 200 affected cattle farms had been identified by late August. Switzerland has also reported the first detections in horses, adding another development scientists are now monitoring. Shamonda virus is transmitted primarily by biting midges (Culicoides). Infection during pregnancy in cattle can be particularly important because related viruses can be associated with reproductive problems and congenital abnormalities. But there is an important distinction: There is currently no evidence that Shamonda virus represents a significant infection risk to humans. Based on current knowledge, viruses of this group are generally not considered relevant zoonotic pathogens. So why are scientists watching it? Because its geographic spread, detections in different animal species and behavior in European livestock populations are still being studied.
