On the flip side, there are many highly trained and very capable people in the office who don’t have a degree and are unable to get promoted simply because they lack one. Meanwhile, positions are sometimes given to people who do have a degree but have little to no practical knowledge or experience doing the actual job. A degree doesn’t necessarily mean someone is more qualified.

I have been in IT Service Management for 30 years, and a Project Manager for most of that. In order to get out of that I had to take large career risks like taking roles bigger than my grade so leadership would see me as promotable. Second, I completed a professional doctorate to seal a promotion. While many of my peers remain in the PM trench or unemployed-I did not want to be forced to retire in my 60s. This also is helping me get into higher Ed to professor, which is my eventual off ramp. The post is correct but had to go through hell and sacrifice a lot to have a chance.
