@eliasjoy100: FORMAL COMPLAINT TO THE FDA GHANA Subject: Formal Concern Over Cigarette-Shaped Candy and Its Potential Influence on Children. Dear Sir/Madam, I respectfully wish to draw the attention of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) Ghana to a candy product that I have recently come across and which I believe deserves the Authority’s urgent attention. I have attached a photograph of the product for your consideration. My concern is not about the candy itself, but about the design, presentation and messaging of the product. As can be seen in the attached photograph, the candy sticks are deliberately designed to closely resemble cigarettes. The packaging itself describes the product as “CIGARETTE ROD LOLLIPOP” and contains the words “YOUNG PEOPLE’S NEW THINGS” and “SMOKE SHAPE HIDES SWEETNESS.” The individual candy sticks also have the appearance of cigarettes, including a white section and an orange/brown section resembling the tobacco portion of a cigarette. As a concerned citizen, I am worried that making a confectionery product look and appear like a cigarette could normalise cigarette imagery among children and young people. Children may become familiar with the appearance and manner of holding a cigarette through such products, even though the product itself is presented as candy. I therefore respectfully appeal to the FDA Ghana to investigate this product and assess whether its design, packaging, labelling, marketing and distribution comply with Ghana’s applicable food, advertising and public-health regulations, particularly with regard to the protection of children. If the Authority considers the product's cigarette-like presentation inappropriate or potentially harmful, I respectfully request that appropriate regulatory action be considered, including requiring the manufacturer or distributor to modify the design and packaging so that the candy does not imitate a tobacco product. I believe that protecting children from the early normalisation of tobacco-related imagery is an important public-health responsibility.
