I'm so sorry about this situation, but as the mother of an autistic daughter, I'd rather have honesty than see her segregated in a classroom without real inclusion. Perhaps you could approach the school with empathy to ask whether it's a lack of resources on their part, or if there are specific areas you can work on with Luna to help her adapt better to her next opportunity. In Mexico, it’s very common that when a school can’t provide the necessary support for a child with learning or developmental difficulties, they ask for a shadow teacher (paid for by the parents) to adapt the curriculum and assist them throughout the process.

You can understand and be sad at the same time. It sucks that life has so many more roadblocks for people that don’t fit in a perfect box. Sending you and your girl all the love and good vibes. With you as her mom I have no doubt she will thrive this year however it looks.

My concern would be- yes you both as parents can communicate with her and teach her effectively through homeschool, but she needs to be able to do the same with the public as she gets older and there’s more opportunity for public contact. Maybe my concern is misguided, or I’m not thinking through it correctly.

It’s so hard to find the right fit. We did 2 years of gen ed then a mixed year of sped/gen ed before finally committing to gen ed with inclusion a couple hours a day. He spends his day in sped working on grade level work at his own pace and in a way that’s best suited to his preferred style of learning.

Offering after school clubs is something I’d consider if you think it can be a positive environment. Could be good to have for socializing in addition to or in case she doesn’t like the Montessori.

I live in Santa Teresa Costa Rica. There’s a Waldorf school (Gaia) and a Montessori school, but it’s newer, it started a year ago. Santa is a great town, expensive but community oriented and so beautiful!

I think they said it so sweetly. I think the invite to clubs is a great compromise. She’s not too much. They just don’t have what she needs. I think you could find the right spot. If there’s an opportunity over there to hire an aide for her to attend programs it might be easier to do than here in the states.
