@prehay1999: Elizabeth Key Grinstead was born around 1630 in colonial Virginia, the daughter of Thomas Key, a wealthy English planter, and an African enslaved woman. After her father's death, she was sold into slavery despite his attempts to protect her. For years she remained classified as enslaved, eventually seeking legal help from a young lawyer named William Grinstead, whom she later married. In 1656, Key sued for her freedom in the Colony of Virginia, arguing her case on two grounds: that her father was a free Englishman who had acknowledged her and arranged her Christian baptism, and that she had served beyond the term of her indenture. The court ruled in her favour on July 21, 1656, freeing both her and her infant son John. It was one of the earliest freedom suits by a person of African descent in the English colonies. Her victory had a significant political consequence. The Virginia House of Burgesses responded by passing a law in 1662 establishing that a child's status would follow the mother's status, not the father's, effectively closing the legal door Key had walked through.
