@alexhollings52: Lasers can be extremely effective close-range air defense systems, but no matter how much power you push through them, they’ll never replace missiles and interceptors. #laser #drone #military #Tech #miltok
Will reflective or ceramic shielding render these laser advances less useful

Why can't we make a gamma laser or phaser?

Alex, have we used lasers in combat yet?

think of today's lasers as bi planes from ww1. the technology jump today will have us using very powerful lasers in about 10 years.

So why the U.S. didn’t use it against Iranian drones instead of the expensive anti missiles?

What would help with all this is a lense that is made of pure crystal or diamond creating a focal point that would be impervious to refraction

If we have a range of only 10 miles and 5-10 seconds to destroy a ballistic missile it seems like we would never have enough time to take out one of them before they hit the ground

If they used kyber crystals instead of dilithium crystals, they could overcome those obstacles.

Also can’t maneuver and cant be cut down if they miss. And they will miss because they still have to be pointed using a fire control radar. They aren’t a great solution most of the time.

The atmosphere isn’t the problem, it’s the solution. These weapons rely on the atmosphere to take it to the target. If you remove the atmosphere or disturb it enough, around and in front of the weapon, then the weapon never makes it to the destination. Why are we trying to burn through metal??

For now. Imagine a 2 or 3 megawatt system on the battlefield. Or a 5 megawatt system? Cause you know thats inevitable. At that point (a decade from now) you’re talking about wearable 100 kilowatt systems.

Why not converge multiple lasers then, reducing each beam’s thermal effect while still converging on the tracked target?

Physics itself says there won't be away to get rid of those blooming or refracting lasers that are bouncing off dust and water in the atmosphere.
I am fairly certain there is no physics solution to this. A laser goes only in one direction unless the laser bounces. Meaning you can't see it unless your the target and the laser is in visible light or your optics can see the wavelengths that is the target.
