Tolkien wasn’t above borrowing from history here, this scene with the charge of the Rohan cavalry is directly inspired by the charge of the Polish cavalry led by king john Sobieski the third on the 12th of September 1683 where with a force of 18,000 horsemen he shattered the huge Ottoman army at the siege of Vienna ending the Ottoman Empire’s ambition to conquer the city
