I've never attended a class with peers who didn't read the syllabus. Some skim, some read it closely, but we all read it. Not a single class in the last 10 years. Even all my students have read the syllabi for the classes I've either TAd or taught. The syllabus "gotchas" don't work because syllabi aren't meant to be read word for word. Syllabus quizzes are better but some profs are very weird about how they word questions versus the syllabus and when more than a few students have to keep retaking the syllabus quiz they assume students aren't reading it instead of reconsidering their own pedagogy and communication.

I had a final assignment in a grad school class initially failed because the professor didn't know what was in his own syllabus. I had the option of a paper or a ppt with notes and a summary, and I did the latter. He only opened the summary doc and graded me on that, ignoring the ppt with notes. I had to go to my advisor and have her talk to the dean and professor to help him find where his syllabus said this was an option. His excuse? He had copied another professor's syllabus and hadn't read it closely enough to notice that option. I was PISSED, but my revised grade was a 99%. . If professors aren't writing, or even reading, their syllabi, why should I give it that much attention?

As both a teacher and a student, I highly value the syllabus. The syllabus keeps me accountable and on track as a teacher and as a student, it’s my rubric to ensure I pass the class.

I read it completely through and always have. And as a student I get soooo tired of listening to questions repeatedly that are in the syllabus.

lol I would make a whole cover page for the syllabus with a TLDR - their late work policy, their grading scale, etc. that’s the contract for the class… that’s what you need if you need to contest your grade or challenge something. SURE the calendar aspect may change but the policy portions are the agreement of the course

Doctoral student here, and we had syllabus quizzes in a couple of our classes. I think they were just freebie grades, because some of our classes are absolute hell.

I was told basically the syllabus is a contract and by not reading it you are agreeing to everything that is in there. I am not going to sign a contract without reading it.
