I was green, less then 3 months in. I was working with a journeyman that was in a scissor lift, I was on the ground. He asked me for 3/8” flat washer. I mistakenly handed him 1/2” instead. He looked at them, looked at me dropped the handful of flat washer on the floor of the lift. Then, he looked at me and said,” them are the wrong ones. , “ well, are you gonna pick them up, boy? Or ain’t ya?”. I told him right then, “ I am not your bitch, I am not your maid.” “ I will not let you or anyone else talk to me like that.” “ you are my journeyman, I am an apprentice, yes, but I am a man first. “You are a teacher, you as a journeyman are my textbook., if you have a problem with me, or you don’t want to teach me,then hand me off to another journeyman .”

My first job as a General Foreman, I went to a site with a new company that had 6 foreman and one other GF. For the first week or two, I sat back and observed. Then one day at lunch, we’re all in the office on lunch and two of the foremen are bitching about the quality of people that we have. So I asked the question,”How many of you are training your people?” Oh, well train the helpers, but not the journeymen. “Why not?” I ain’t training a fucking journeyman.

I use a 3 step method, with my apprentices. 1) Watch me do the task. I.E. Bending conduit. 2) Show me what you got, then I make corrections. 3) You should have it down and I should be able to rely on you. If I cant rely on you, then I question your initiative.

dude i feel like i show up to work every single day and give a 110 percent no complains , no matter what i do they call me shit, they don’t want me to work when all i do is try to work and it’s like there insecure that i wanna level up or something. i go home study my code book all i know is im afraid to even get my license they’ll throw me out because im not sure how to do certain things and all i strive for is learning

As a journeyman, I can tell you from experience. I've had apprentices that have annoyed the fuck out of me. and at that point, when they don't want to listen, and they don't wanna learn, is, when I tell them figure it out.

I had shit journeyman when I was an apprentice and resorted to studying all of could to learn more. now as a senior tech I train my guys to the best of my ability. however there's sometimes i just have to be the one doing the work, and making voltage checks.

That's the biggest key factory here with apprentices, being modest humble, and admitting that they don't know everything and are willing to learn anything that involves their trade.

learning how to bend pipe. Journey showed me once and didn’t explain nothing to me. After he got done he put that pipe up and told me he needed another one. When i was confused i tried to ask a question he told me to figure it out. When i was struggling he came down from the lift and snatched the pipe and bent it. He then got pissed and told me “are you good for something”. He then later left all his tools out and told me to pick them up and he left back to our laydown. Left his tools he got mad and we fought in the parking lot
