パラオのペリリュー島へ行ってきました🇵🇼 まず驚いたのは、島の至る所に未だ戦争の遺跡がたくさん残っていること。歩いていてふと目にしたものからも歴史を感じられました。こんなにも今ある平和に感謝できた旅ははじめてかもしれない。たくさんの人にぜひ訪れてほしい島です。 This paradise was once a battlefield, 80 years ago. A little while ago, I traveled alone to Palau. Crystal-clear waters, beautiful nature, and incredibly kind people. It was such a peaceful place. But there was one place in Palau that I really wanted to see with my own eyes. Peleliu Island. In 1944, a fierce battle between Japanese and American forces took place on this small island. Around 10,000 Japanese soldiers lost their lives here. Even today, remnants of the war remain across the island— tanks, buildings, and caves. Standing there in person, I looked around and saw nothing but a beautiful ocean and a peaceful landscape. And yet, 80 years ago, so many people fought and lost their lives in this very place. I found myself wondering… What were the soldiers thinking as they looked out at this same view? And how did the people of this island feel as they watched their homeland become a battlefield? Learning about war in a textbook and actually standing where it happened felt completely different to me. Our generation has never experienced war. And that’s exactly why I believe there is so much meaning in visiting these places, seeing them with our own eyes, learning what happened, and taking the time to think about it. It has been 81 years since the war ended. What can we do to make sure the same tragedy never happens again? August 15th marks the end of the war for Japan.
