I worked with peowith schizophrenia. Many of them were smokers and some actually said that smoking helped them when they were experiencing symptoms like disorganization or auditory hallucinations.

People with dementia are already getting close to the end of their lives, so what if is addictive? Is the addiction worse then the disease? It's a pretty mild addiction as it is, but at the point where someone has dementia does it even matter?

I mean, we know that many forms of dementia are cumulative. So, by the time mild impairment is evident, it likely won't make a difference. We'd need to see 20-30 years of nicotine usage to see if it can prevent or delay the development of dementia.

I don't think nicotine would work, it's ok for a healthy brain. but I have a problem with using nicotine patches for a real study (smoker, used them). first, you don't know how much nicotine patients are really on. clean skin, sweat etc. and patches actually do not release nicotine gradually

There's a study on whether or not people with ADHD use nicotine for self-medicating. It concluded that we do not because, when given Adderall, we tend to continue nicotine usage. In the conclusion of that paper, it did not even occur to the authors that the Adderall is not effective in the way that the nicotine is. Nicotine doesn't make me feel like shit. Adderall does.
