As a psychiatrist, one thing I really want people to understand is that mental health treatment is not ONLY medication. Medication can absolutely be life-changing. But there is also growing evidence that things like exercise, nutrition, sleep, and lifestyle changes can meaningfully impact depression and anxiety as well. In this video I discuss: the Duke exercise studies on depression the BMJ meta-analysis on exercise and mental health the SMILES trial looking at nutrition and depression and the growing evidence behind the gut-brain connection Your brain and body are not separate systems. Sleep, inflammation, stress hormones, movement, nutrition, and social connection all interact with mental health in powerful ways. This doesn’t mean depression is “cured” by going to the gym or eating healthier. Many people still benefit enormously from therapy and medication. But I think sometimes we underestimate how powerful it can be when we start addressing both the brain and the body together. #MentalHealth #depression #anxiety #exercise #nutrition
