If you merely release a tungsten rod in orbit, NOTHING HAPPENS. The rod just stays in orbit with whatever was holding it there in the first place. You must DEORBIT by firing retro rockets first.

Tungston rods will never be a thing. It would have to be the size of a telephone pole. The cost of launching one into space would literally be astronomical.
