Sierra Leone’s Chief Justice Komba Kamanda Releases 11 Inmates in Kailahun, Including 20-Year-Old Convicted of Stealing 1kg of Cocoa. *KAILAHUN CORRECTIONAL CENTRE, 16 October 2026:* Sierra Leone’s Chief Justice, His Lordship Honourable Justice Komba Kamanda, has released eleven (11) inmates convicted of various minor offences in Kailahun District, a move aimed at promoting access to justice and decongesting correctional facilities. Pursuant to Cap. 17 of the Laws of Sierra Leone, 1960, which confer supervisory and review powers on the Chief Justice over decisions, convictions and sentences of Magistrates’ Courts, Chief Justice Kamanda reviewed the cases of inmates serving sentences for minor offences. During the visit, the Chief Justice was described as the first substantive Chief Justice to visit Kailahun District and preside over such proceedings at the Correctional Centre, resulting in the release of eleven inmates. One of the released inmates, 20-year-old Abdul Momoh, had been convicted of Larceny after stealing one kilogramme of cocoa valued at NLe 80, equivalent to less than US$5. Momoh, a resident of Kumbala in Kailahun Town, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment or to compensate the Complainant with NLe 2,000. He disclosed that he had spent almost three months at the Kailahun Correctional Centre. Before ordering the release of the inmates, Chief Justice Kamanda issued a stern warning, emphasising that the decision was not intended merely to free convicted persons but was guided by the law and the need to ensure justice. He explained that the exercise also provided an opportunity to review the work of Magistrates and identify cases in which convictions and sentences for minor offences warranted intervention. The Chief Justice reiterated the importance of ensuring that justice is administered fairly and proportionately while addressing overcrowding in correctional facilities. He encouraged the released inmates to desist and be productive in society. The Member of Parliament for Kailahun District, Honourable Hindolo Moiwo Gevao, commended the Chief Justice for his commitment to promoting access to justice and upholding the rule of law. “I commend the Chief Justice for being so desirous of promoting access to justice and upholding the rule of law,” he said. Honourable Gevao further observed that Chief Justice Kamanda had made history by travelling to Kailahun to commission two quarters for the Resident High Court Judge and Magistrate before visiting the Correctional Centre to preside over proceedings that resulted in the release of eleven inmates. He expressed appreciation to the Chief Justice and his entourage for visiting the District and demonstrating a commitment to justice delivery. Honourable Chief Justice Kamanda was accompanied by Honourable Justices John Bosco Allieu JA, Jamesina E.L. King JA, Santigie Ibrahim Sorie Bangura J and Isata Susan Sellu Tucker J, as well as Magistrates and senior management staff of the Judiciary.
