Underwater waterfall, Mauritius 🇲🇺 The "underwater waterfall" off Mauritius is a famous natural illusion found near Le Morne on the island's southwest coast. From an aerial view, it appears as if water plunges into a vast abyss beneath the Indian Ocean, but the phenomenon is actually caused by sand and silt cascading off a shallow ocean shelf into much deeper waters, creating the impression of a dramatic, tumbling waterfall. How the Illusion Works This effect results from Mauritius being located on a submarine plateau—an underwater 'shelf' that's only about 150 meters deep, but drops abruptly to depths of over 4,000 meters. Strong ocean currents sweep sand and lighter sediment off the edge of this shelf and down into the deeper ocean, producing swirling clouds that, seen from above, mimic the look of an enormous underwater waterfall. Where and How to See It The illusion is best admired from the air, either via helicopter or seaplane tour, as it can’t be fully appreciated from the shoreline or even from boats. Popular tours depart from the Le Morne Peninsula, and the vibrant shades of blue, ranging from turquoise over the shallow shelf to deep indigo in the drop-off, add to the visual spectacle. Scientific and Geological Context Mauritius, like neighboring islands such as La Réunion, was formed by volcanic activity around 8 million years ago.
