I absolutely understand why Trey Reed's death initially raised questions, especially considering Mississippi's history. But I also think we have to be careful about continuing to present something as fact when the evidence that has come out since then tells us more. A few important points: • The night before Trey died, his girlfriend reportedly received text messages from him discussing suicide and saying he was going to hang himself. • Members of Trey's own family later confirmed seeing those messages. • The Mississippi State Medical Examiner ruled his death a suicide by hanging. • Authorities reported finding no evidence of foul play. • His family still deserves transparency and answers to any remaining questions, including regarding the independent autopsy they requested. We should absolutely investigate suspicious deaths and take concerns seriously. But not every Black person who dies by hanging was necessarily the victim of a racial lynching. Suicide by hanging unfortunately happens across races, and we shouldn't determine what happened based solely on the person's race and the method of death. A 21-year-old lost his life, and there is evidence that he was struggling before his death. That deserves our attention and compassion too. Ask questions. Investigate. Demand transparency. But we should also be willing to follow the evidence wherever it leads.
