Epic Life Tales :
The deeper meaning of Surah Al-Baqarah 2:138 — “Ṣibghat Allah” (the coloring of Allah) is not simply about “coloring.” In classical tafsir, Allah’s coloring refers to Allah’s religion, guidance, and the natural faith (fitrah) upon which He created human beings.
Just as dye penetrates something and changes its appearance, true faith in Allah should penetrate deeply into a person and shape their beliefs, character, worship, choices, and way of life.
This ayah also connects with the verses immediately before it, where Allah tells us to believe in the revelation given to Ibrahim, Isma’il, Ishaq, Ya’qub, Musa, ’Isa (Jesus Christ), and all the prophets, peace be upon them, without making distinctions between them. The message is that the true spiritual identity is not based merely on calling oneself Jewish, Christian, Muslim, or belonging to a particular people—it is submission to the One God and following His guidance.
That is why the ayah ends:
وَنَحْنُلَهُعَابِدُونَ
“And we are worshippers of Him.”
In other words: Let Allah’s guidance be what defines and transforms you from within.
