Fars Province: Fars Province, located in southern Iran, is one of the most historically important regions of the country. Its name comes from Pars, the ancient homeland of the Persians, and it gave its name to Persia itself. The province has played a central role in Iranian history for more than two thousand years and contains some of the most famous archaeological sites in Iran. Fars was the heartland of the Achaemenid Empire, founded by Cyrus the Great in the sixth century BCE. Cyrus established his capital at Pasargadae, where his famous tomb can still be seen today. Nearby stands Persepolis, one of the greatest monuments of the ancient world. Built primarily under Darius the Great and his successors, Persepolis served as an important ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire. Its enormous stairways, columns and reliefs demonstrate the wealth and sophistication of ancient Persia. Fars remained important centuries later under the Sasanian Empire. The Sasanians established their dynasty in the region, and the province contains important remains from their rule. Ardashir I, the founder of the Sasanian Empire, came from Fars and established his royal centre at Ardashir-Khwarrah, near modern Firuzabad. His successors expanded the empire and made the Sasanian state one of the major powers of Late Antiquity. Fars also became famous for producing some of the greatest figures of Persian literature. Saadi Shirazi, one of Iran's most celebrated poets, was born in Shiraz. His works, particularly the Gulistan and Bustan, became enormously influential throughout the Persian-speaking world. Shiraz later became known as a major centre of Persian poetry, culture and gardens. From the Achaemenids and Sasanians to Saadi and the cultural heritage of Shiraz, Fars represents an extraordinary continuity of Iranian civilisation.
