Susan, the head financial advisor of the PTA, invited the rest of the heads over for wine and charcuterie to discuss the upcoming fundraiser for the middle school field trip. I arrived, wine in hand and a fake smile plastered across my face to hide the disdain I had for Susan. She stole my position as head financial advisor only because she collected more box tops than I did. However, I know she bribed the rest of the moms to give her more box tops in order to beat me. I don’t know why she acts like she won fair and square when that position should’ve been mine. Now I’m stuck as the head event coordinator, the job no one wanted because it requires setting up and cleaning for every event. The meeting went just as I thought. Susan blabbed the entire time about her ideas and the rest of the moms eagerly agreed when tasked with all the work. Once a couple of the moms got up to leave, I knew it was my cue to head home. I didn’t want to stay in this liar’s house more than I needed to. But as soon as I stood up Susan’s voice buzzed in my ear like a pestering mosquito. “Oh Margaret, stay behind will ya? I’d like to discuss the event logistics with you since you’re the event coordinator.” What else would she possibly need to discuss after she talked the entire meeting? I turned towards her, the corners of my mouth lifted revealing a wide smile “Sure!” Once the other moms left, Susan and I took a seat in front of her kitchen island. She poured me another glass of wine before pouring herself a hefty glass. “What did you want to discuss Susan?” I looked at her with a piercing stare. If she makes me do all the work for these fundraisers… “Actually I didn’t want to discuss the fundraiser. I said that so I could finally have a chat with you without the peanut gallery present.” Oh? “What else would we discuss if not the fundraiser?” Is she finally going to admit she cheated?? My brows were scrunched with intrigue as I took a sip of my wine. “Margaret… I know… how do I put this… I know you’ve been having a hard time since your husband left you and the kids…” Susan paused and looked at me with a concerned look. Is she pitying me or is she being genuine?
