After the nail was addressed, her toe got a chlorhexidine soak and rinse, and she was an absolute angel for the whole thing. Ingrown nails are something we see fairly often in cats, and the surprising part is that owners may not realize they’re there. Cat claws naturally grow in a curved shape, so when they become too long, they can eventually curl back toward the paw pad. Regular nail trimming helps reduce the chance of a claw growing into the pad and potentially causing pain, inflammation, or infection. 👵🐱 Senior kitties deserve some extra toe checks! As cats age, their claws can become thicker, more brittle, and overgrown. Older cats may also scratch less effectively, particularly when arthritis or other mobility changes make scratching uncomfortable. At home, make a habit of gently checking every toe, including those easy to forget dewclaws. Look for nails getting unusually long or thick, curling toward the pad, or any redness, swelling, discharge, odor, sensitivity, or limping. If a nail has already grown into the paw pad, contact your veterinarian rather than trying to pull or dig it out yourself. And don’t forget the scratchers! Scratching is an important natural behavior that helps cats remove old claw sheaths. Offer several options, vertical and horizontal scratchers in different materials like sisal, carpet, and cardboard, and pay attention to what your cat prefers.
