Speaking about the recent tensions with once-close neighbor Bangladesh, Shringla said Tarique Rahman’s diplomatic activities surrounding the upcoming BRICS summit would put India in an uncomfortable position on the international stage. Expressing his frustration, Shringla said, “Tarique Rahman is playing with India’s honor. At the BRICS summit, the whole world will know that India has given shelter to a person who was removed from power following a mass uprising in Bangladesh and convicted of crimes against humanity. Multiple cases involving enforced disappearances and killings are also being tried against him. Not only that, we have also been accused of protecting two suspects in the killing of young revolutionary Osman Hadi.” He further claimed, “The whole world knows that whenever we call, all the countries of South Asia come rushing to us. But now even Afghanistan has to be courted very carefully to attend—and this too will become public. And Tarique Rahman is responsible for this.” Explaining New Delhi’s position, he said, “Even if Tarique Rahman did not come to the BRICS summit, if he had simply come to India before September 10—even just for lunch—we would have sent him dinner in a tiffin carrier. Yet, foolishly, he is not even coming to India.” The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has not officially responded to Shringla’s remarks.
