Recipes like Water Pie are remembered as part of that tradition of “make do” cooking. There’s no fruit filling or rich custard here. Water is poured directly into the pie crust, then flour, sugar, butter, and a little vanilla transform it into a sweet filling as it bakes. And here’s a piece of Depression era history I find fascinating: food wasn’t always scarce because it didn’t exist.
