🔴 CORONATION 🔴 The king is dead, long live the king,’ is a well-known proclamation of succession to the throne that aptly describes the transition in the Kingdom of Tooro, following the untimely demise of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the world’s youngest monarch, on August 27, 2026. Accompanied by the Omusuuga of Tooro Kingdom, Hon. Mary Kuteesa Kamuli, the Minister of State for Gender and Culture Affairs, ended weeks of speculation about the possible emergence of a ‘King Baby Oyo’ when she officially announced the coronation of his Majesty, Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, the thirteenth Omukama of Tooro, is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 29, 2026 at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal, during a press conference at Uganda Media Centre on Thursday, September 24, 2026. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has confirmed his attendance at the coronation. “As a minister from Tooro Kingdom, I understand our deep wound. We will always miss King Oyo, and we will always hold him in a special place in our culture and our hearts. We keep the Queen Mother and Princess Ruth in our prayers,” Kamuli began, in a sombre tone. “I am pleased to inform Uganda, Tooro Kingdom has officially communicated to government that Tooro has a new king. The succession process was undertaken by the recognised traditional institutions of Tooro in accordance with the customs, traditions and established practices governing succession to the throne. The Babiito Clan, under the leadership of the Omusuuga Charles Kayondo Kamurasi Akiiki, Head of the Babiito Royal Clan, selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma on September 9, 2026, at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal, the prince was subsequently presented to and endorsed by the Rukurato Rw’Obukama Bwa Tooro, the Supreme Council of the Kingdom, which convened at Rukurato Chambers in Muchwa on September 15, 2026. Government has received the resolutions of the Succession Committee and the Rukurato in support of the succession process. Following the completion of the succession process Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma was formerly affirmed as the successor to the Obukama bwa Tooro and assumed the official name and title of his Majesty Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, Omukama w’Obukama Bwa Tooro,” the statement reads in part. The Omusuuga of Tooro Kingdom reaffirmed the minister’s statement, by welcoming everyone in Uganda and all Ugandans in the Diaspora to attend the coronation. “When Omukama Oyo passed away, I assumed all the powers of the kingdom, and when the time comes, I will surrender the powers,” he promised. The Omusuuga made an appeal, to all friends of Tooro and well-wishers, to support the Kingdom of Tooro’s fundraising drive ahead of the coronation, by donating funds to the kingdom’s coronation organising committee account in Centenary Bank and Mobile Banking, which is *165*3# and Merchant Code is 22655479.
