Ninety-nine point nine-nine percent of us humans, upon death, plunge into the nether realms or hell in massive numbers. Only a tiny fraction, equivalent to the dirt under a fingernail, manages to be reborn as humans or ascend to heaven. This statement is actually recorded in a scripture called the Nakhasikkha Sutta. Many people tend to think superficially, 'I go to temple, make merit, and don't harm anyone; when I die, I'll surely go to heaven'. Yes, that is just you thinking to yourself unilaterally. But in Buddhism, it is not like that at all, because the state of the mind at the final moment before death swings very easily. Even if you have done good your entire life, the split second when you are about to run out of breath—if you feel fear of death, attachment to wealth, attachment to children, or suddenly feel angry at someone—your mind plunges straight down to hell, like someone falling off a cliff unexpectedly. But amidst this terrifying reality, do you know what binds us and prevents us from attaining liberation? In Buddhism, it is called samyojana; it is like ten chains tying our mind to a prison called the circle of rebirth. Yet the only way out for you to permanently close the gates of hell one hundred percent, without having to gamble or take risks at your final gasping breath, is that you do not need to cut all ten chains. You only need to snap the first three chains, and your mind will be instantly upgraded to a Sotapanna (Stream-Enterer). This VIP ticket guarantees that you will cycle through rebirths no more than seven times, and in every lifetime you will never fall lower than the human realm again before heading straight into Nirvana. Chain 1: Sakkaya-ditthi (Identity view). Letting go of the view that this body and mind are truly "us". It sounds simple, but think about it: whenever someone scolds us or we fall ill, the mind immediately protests, "This is me, my self, mine". To truly accept from the bottom of one's heart that this body and mind are merely something borrowed from the world and must one day be returned to the world requires intense mindfulness and refinement. Chain 2: Vicikiccha (Skepticism). Cutting out doubt regarding the law of karma one hundred percent. This is the point that sounds easy but is actually very difficult, because in real life, when we face storms and overwhelming suffering that suddenly attacks and causes fear, humans often secretly question and wonder immediately, 'Does doing good really bring good results? Why do evil people and corrupt individuals still prosper and strut around in plain sight?' But for a Sotapanna, the mind is clear without a single "eh"?, resulting in an unshakeable faith of the kind where even if someone puts a gun to your head and says, 'If you don't stop following Buddhism, I'll shoot you dead', you would rather be shot to death than agree to change your belief. Chain 3: Silabbata-paramasa (Attachment to rites and rituals). This point is extremely difficult to do in our present era because we live in a time full of superstitious trends (sai mu). At the slightest thing, people run to take holy water baths, remove bad luck, or pray and beg external sacred beings for blessings and protection. But a Sotapanna completely cuts through this matter; they abandon superstition and turn back to focus purely on their own actions, until the five precepts become second nature and operate as an automatic system—meaning the mind transcends the desire to lie or cheat anyone, without you needing to force yourself to keep the precepts anymore.
