It caught my attention that he cannot take what isn't freely offered to him. That's why he always just had a glass of water and a bowl of soup, nothing else. Those are the kinds of things that are usually offered in a food establishment when a customer first sits down. I've said it hundreds of times myself working at bars and restaurants. "Hey, how are you doing tonight? Could I start you off with a glass of water, maybe our soup special?" It's a specific offer. He couldn't order off the menu, he just had to take whatever was directly offered to him.
