The case came to public attention after social media activist VeryDarkMan petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, following Ezekiel’s claim that his left kidney had been removed without his informed consent. Subsequent medical scans reportedly showed that the kidney was absent, prompting the Police Special Tactical Squad to launch an investigation. However, the investigation has revealed a more complicated account of consent. Police and family accounts indicate that Ezekiel later admitted that he had initially agreed to sell his kidney after allegedly being promised ₦1.7 million, but raised the alarm after receiving far less than the agreed amount. Investigators allege that the network targeted financially vulnerable young people and used forged NINs, birth certificates and donor-consent documents to facilitate the procedures.
