@luckyleftie: i will be approaching #avatarsevenhavens with a more open mind bc i think it’s unfair to snap-judge based off one trailer, but these are the concerns i have recently had about the #avatarthelastairbender franchise as a whole
I'll forever die on the hill that they should've just stopped at the original show

another example of removing cultural and historical specificity in legend of korra is the overtly christian coding of raava and vaatu and the spirits turning into essentially pokémon. the spirit world is flattened from the morally neutral powerful spirit world more aligned with indigenous worldviews that it was it atla. and the spirit world is even stupider in the new movie, so i seriously doubt 7h is going to improve anything

Are you sure :
While I like Korra I’m not really a huge fan of how bending switched from a thing that was taught to us by the creatures of the world to a more spiritual lottery. I also agree that they have been slowly making bending just “punch and fire will come out” and less a practice of mastering martial arts and understanding the elements you are using and I think that’s lazy.

Ngl, ppl don’t wanna hear me say it, but I think the new writing system and the lack of their original ethnic features on the majority of characters in the movie feels like they’re whitewashing the project

I think it is important to point out, that Avatar draws a lot of inspiration from buddist and south asian philosphy yet up until 7H it has always relegated those characters and cultures into the background. For me personally I think its important that avatar is also showing these cultures in a wide verity of genres. These cultures shouldn’t just be relegated to historical fantasy, I love the idea of an Indian inspired post apocalyptic world . And its so nice that finally these projects are being showrun by people of those cultures at least for 7H

I think it was Jeannette Ng that I first saw point out how the worldbuilding in Korra feels weird because it's very clearly a western idea of development appearing in a world where there is no in universe western influence

the thing that I hate is how the writers of Avatar: The Legend of Korra created a city and new country that was intended to simply be an insert of the United States of America. I hate when they put America into things that shouldn't have America. The United Republic in Avatar, The United States of Auradon in Descendants, it's so lazy.

I would like to point out that, for at least the beginning of korra, the homogenization of bending styles is somewhat grounded in the story. With the idea that all of the bending cultures are coming together in a way they never have. Which is then pushed further by the concept of "pro bending" as entertainment that uses rules to even further simplify bending styles.

The white showrunners have fallen into a racist pit hole. It’s okay to say that.

At one point the rumors were that the creators of ATLA wanted to move toward a Tron like futuristic sci-fi. And I'm just wondering how the fuck bending even fits into that. it certainly couldn't be very cultural

It’s insane how they homogenized everything so quickly, when this is such an easy series to build backwards on and explore the history of

as an indian i can’t help but be skeptical about 7H’s “representation” bc atla represented hindu and buddhist philosophy so beautifully, but 7H (like every avatar project after atla) will likely just slap our culture’s visual features on a western default story. physical features being represented is important but diversity of actual culture and thought is way more so

we really didn't need a sci-fi post apocalyptic world like what 7 heavens appears to be, I understand that it's TECHNICALLY the next major step in the development of the world but it just completely erases how unique atla's world was, with legend of Korra it made sense (even though the jump was still pretty big) but now it seems like they're just the real world roots and instead turning it into another generic fantasy show

This is why I’m critical of Korra! Like the character herself I love! I think she’s super complex and I think I prefer her over Aang. That’s not my criticism! The world, history, and lore changed so much with TLoK and it just didn’t work for me. Why do we have people blood bending during the day+not on a full moon? Why are we merging the spirit and human worlds when we have been shown many times in both TLA and TLoK why that’s not a good idea? How does merging the spirit worlds create airbenders and why did it not create more of other types of benders???
