Coming to Japan under the Burma-Japan Specified Skilled Worker bilateral agreement to address an aging population and labor shortage, these workers—men and women between their 20s and 30s—arrived and began working in May and June at an agricultural enterprise in Kyōwa town near Sapporo City, Hokkaido Prefecture. According to the Sapporo Labor Union, the six Burma workers faced incidents where a Japanese employee, angered by their lack of Japanese language proficiency, struck them on the head with farming equipment and engaged in non-consensual physical touching and sexual harassment. Furthermore, they were reportedly cursed at almost daily and threatened with deportation from Japan. Because of this, the union stated that they no longer wish to continue working at this job.
