Oh her parents absolutely knew what they were doing. It sounds like they got greedy. That's not a normal rental agreement. She could have also applied squatters rights potentially if there was no formal agreement too. I feel she has a few legal avenues, all of which the owner of the property has not followed legal processing eg. was bond ever held, were there documented inspections etc.
