It just means they’re increasing more slowly. Back in 2019, annual inflation in Australia was around 1.8%. Then in 2022, it peaked at 7.8% the highest annual inflation Australia had seen since 1990. Fast forward to July 2026 and prices are STILL rising, with inflation sitting at 3.5%. Some of the latest annual increases include: 🏠 Housing: +5.0%
🛒 Food & non-alcoholic drinks: +3.2%
🎓 Education: +4.8%
👕 Clothing & footwear: +4.9% And here’s the part that explains why so many people still feel squeezed: Employee household living costs increased 3.7% over the year to June 2026, while wages increased around 3.2%. So even when your salary goes up, it can still feel like you’re standing still. A $100 grocery shop becoming $105 might not seem dramatic. But when it happens across groceries, rent, insurance, electricity, eating out, transport and almost everything else you pay for… it adds up FAST. That’s why comparing your lifestyle today to what the same income could buy 5–10 years ago can be misleading. The number in your bank account might be bigger.
