Essentially, the point is to make sure the bear knows you're there. Talk, have something like your keys attached to your pack so they jingle, just something so they hear you.

You can actually say anything it's just people say hey bear because if you see one your brain shuts off so it's good to have that phrase in your pocket. But you could say hey giraffe or "I see you over there" and freak out other hikers

Carry a back pack and if a bear comes after you throw down the back pack and run, the bear will check your pack for food

lol it’s best to only say that if you hear rustling in the bushes or see an actual bear. You could confuse locals and make them think there’s a bear when there isn’t, the person in the comments is misleading I’ve lived on Vancouver island all my life and no one just randomly calls out “Hey Bear”. Just converse at a good volume and you’ll be fine

I went on a hike w a guide in Waterton NP n the guide yelled every few minutes "YO, YOGI, NO BEARS!" like at the top of her lungs. musta worked, saw no bears on the hike

Love watching your videos and getting a visitors perspective of our beautiful corner of the world. Even at home when I’m taking the dog out for her evening pee, “Hey bear!” is the first thing I say once I’m out the door. You’ve mastered the pronunciation perfectly 👍

If you're walking in bear country, just talk to each other in a normal to slightly louder speaking voice. The "hey bear" is for if you see a bear and you want to say that as loud as possible in a human voice. Don't make grunting noises or try to sounds more aggressive, just loud. Also, don't listen to the people suggesting bear bells and key jingles... those have been proven to NOT deter bears.

I would highly recommend using the phrase “Woah Bear!” I lived in the bush during the summers and that’s what the crew would say when we saw a bear
