I have a genuine question, and I want to apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge on this topic. I have naturally very curly hair, but unfortunately, I’ve caused a lot of heat damage, and it’s gotten to the point where it’s becoming really difficult to manage. For a little background, I’m Puerto Rican, born and raised in the Caribbean, where it’s completely normal to see girls wearing braids and different protective hairstyles. However, I now live in Illinois, and I’m not entirely sure how these hairstyles are perceived here or whether there are different cultural expectations surrounding them. I’ve been considering getting braids, but I want to be respectful and mindful of the cultural significance behind certain hairstyles. Would it be appropriate for me to wear braids? The last thing I want is to make anyone feel uncomfortable or disrespected by wearing a hairstyle that might not be culturally appropriate for me. I’m genuinely asking because I’d love to learn and hear different perspectives. ❤️
