The ocean’s ultimate traveller 🌊 Meet the Leatherback Sea Turtle - the largest of all living sea turtles, and one of the most extraordinary long-distance travellers in our oceans. Unlike other sea turtles, Leatherbacks don’t have a hard shell. Instead, their backs are covered by a flexible, leathery skin with seven distinctive ridges. This unique body design helps them withstand the immense pressure of deep water - and these remarkable turtles can dive to depths of more than 1,000 metres in search of food. And their favourite food? Jellyfish 🪼 Leatherbacks can travel thousands of kilometres between feeding and breeding grounds, following the seasonal abundance of jellyfish across entire ocean basins. Some even make their way into UK waters during the summer months! But this incredible lifestyle comes with serious risks. Leatherbacks face threats from fishing bycatch, entanglement, plastic pollution, habitat loss and climate change. Because their diet consists largely of jellyfish, plastic bags and other floating debris can also be mistaken for food - with potentially devastating consequences. Despite being ancient survivors that have existed for more than 100 million years, leatherbacks are now facing a rapidly changing ocean.
