The blower targets the thin line where burning vegetation meets the dry grass capable of carrying the fire forward. High-velocity airflow can disrupt flames and move burning material back toward ground that has already burned, where little combustible vegetation remains. On light fuels such as dry grass, this can help knock down a low-intensity flame front while exposing and clearing smoldering material. Portable blowers are one of several tools crews can use during wildland fire suppression, particularly for controlling light vegetation and assisting with mop-up.
