My app made it look like I had to pay. But when I checked in on my laptop on the web version the button to bypass was there.

Instead of clicking on one of the seats, you should be able to just hit the continue button on the bottom without choosing something.

How early are you buying the tickets in advance?? You could be getting them too close to when it departs and thats all thats left. Alaska you pick it when you buy the ticket. Check in is more confirm you are going and whos getting what assigned seats

Checking in ahead of time is mostly about reserving your seat choice and not mandatory…just check in in-person at the counter with an agent. Maybe a slightly higher chance of getting bumped but I’m guessing you are also someone who shows up early and not as your flight is boarding so it will prob be fine. Worst case they put you on the next flight and give you a voucher?
