@.carolgiselle: Stop telling your students to “just pay attention.” 👀 Sometimes they don’t need another reminder to listen… they need to understand WHY they should. This week, my first graders were RESTLESS. And honestly? I understood why. They’re coming from kindergarten, lessons are getting longer, books are getting longer, and they’re being asked to sustain their attention for much longer periods of time. So instead of repeatedly saying, “Eyes on me,” “Pay attention,” or “Stop whining”… I STOPPED THE LESSON. I showed them a black-and-white brain 🧠 and a colorful brain 🌈🧠 and explained WHY we come to school, WHY we have to participate even when we’re tired or sad, and WHY learning actually matters. And the difference was immediate. Their engagement increased. Their discourse improved. They started reminding THEMSELVES that they wanted a “colorful brain.” Because now they understood the purpose. I will forever be the teacher who explains the WHY. Because little ones are capable of understanding SO much more than we give them credit for. When children buy into the WHY, you don’t have to fight as hard for the WHAT. Sometimes the best classroom management strategy isn’t another consequence, reward, or reminder.
