THIS is why commentary videos are so crucial. NOBODY else is giving these kinds of analysis for important subjects like this.

If you're a normie, the "forced" mommy or generic inflections and tone will easily attract you. It literally sounds like an AI

My main criticisms have to do with the archetypes of characters. Theres always goth girl asmr, but the audio by itself would never make the viewer think that the speaker is goth, except for either a mention of music or clothes. So much can be done with a goth character (rebellious personality, connections to gothic poetry/media, etc.)

Curious what you think of non-rp ASMR. Like the ones that are just sounds. Personally, I don’t like the RP ones cuz at that point it’s not really what ASMR is, it’s just a role play video. Actual ASMR is supposed to trigger its namesake, Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. 90% of the time “Mommy ASMR” is just what you said, something for people who are lonely to use, and not audio that’s intended to trigger the physical ASMR reaction, which kinda muddies what people think ASMR actually is imo

This is interesting as hell. I’ve never been into ASMR but it’s cool to see someone who actually interacted with this medium share genuine criticisms that aren’t just “that’s cringe”

we had the best mommy asmr made by porcupine toast and then she disappeared like the fucking avatar. I haven't seen anything as good as her stuff, I just stopped listening to the roleplay videos altogether after she quit because no one is that good

target audience here. I got into it independently way before it turned into a tiktok trend back when "mommy" was still embarrassing and unfortunately pretty much everything you assumed about me was true. I think you were right to a degree about it being a vicarious experience but in my opinion what you're missing is that the listener is optimally taking it in rather than trying to establish themselves over it. I think this is the very core of what makes it vicarious, in fact. When there is a "willing listener" audio, you're expected to go into it as a willing listener in order to have the experience intended by the creator. It's for this same reason that the idea of including dead air for the sake of listener interaction is just pretty silly. You're supposed to be immersed in a story that plays out on its own; the events of the audio are driven by the speaker and the listener's role is just to listen, and adding long breaks in dialogue detracts from the generally soothing intent of the audio. The focus of the story and the enjoyment of listening inherently comes from the speaker's character and the listener imagining THEIR presence, and so naturally the identity of the listener is sidelined if not completely irrelevant. The more active engagement your meat computer is looking for lies in sitting in the dark, listening closely, and imagining the audio in a kind of gold panning for affection and honestly if someone doesn't feel the need to do any of that (no shade at all! applies to most well adjusted people!) then-- and I know it's a lame gimmick for a fan to respond to criticism with "it's just not for you" and I hate to be that fan but-- you just might not need to get into it. Being the actual target audience for this kind of thing really really matters. would love to discuss this more (believe it or not I do in fact have more bullshit to say) because while I leaned more towards disagreeing with a lot of your points I appreciate you having an open handed discussion rather than trying to be all ironic and ayooo caught in 4k. credentials below + sorry for typing allat
